Hi....bone density tests?
Posted 1 year ago # -
Hi Grace,
A bone density test is like a 3D x-ray. The purpose is to monitor for Osteoporosis and/or any weakening of the bones as a result of Menopause. It is a painfree, quick and easy process. I have one annually and the first one I had done after I went into Menopause serves as a baseline to compare with any changes in my bones over time.
I think it's the change/reduction of Estrogen levels in Menopause that increases the chance of Osteoporosis and obviously if you enter Menopause early it's something just to keep check of. It's also why taking calcium supplements is so important in Menopause. I also learnt that for Calcium to be absorbed well, you need to have good Vitamin D levels - it's worth getting them checked too - just a simple blood test.
For a bone density test you just need a referral from your GP and they will know a place that does them in your area. Sometimes it's a hospital or a clinic. The GP can fill in a form for the test to be discounted dependent on your age. I pay $20 for mine. You also need to take your Medicare card along!
Hope this helps ....
